The Supreme Patriarch or Sangharaja (สังฆราช) is the head of the order of Buddhist monks in Thailand. Its full title is Somdet Phra Sangkharat Sakonlamahasangkhaparinayok (สมเด็จพระสังฆราช สกลมหาสังฆปริณายก) "the Supreme Patriarch, the Head of all Members of the Sangha". The position is formally appointed by the King of Thailand, although the actual selection is made by senior clergymen. It was established in 1782 at the founding of the Chakri dynasty by King Rama I. Sorry I didn't add in my post this morning that most, if not all, chiong places will "100% chop stamp close" with his passing. However I understand some joints started business tonight at 11pm. Come on lets not speculate. We are in Thailand to have fun but still have to be respectful of the majority Buddhist population though its debatable how conservative Thai society is. |
