Just as you are afraid of them, they are also afraid of you being AV or gong an.
you have go to their place at least once and "do" there before they are willing to come out or spend a night with you.
one trick i always try is to bring cash for their service plus a couple of hundreds more, keep everything else at home/hotel ... if any thing happens, give them all the money and tell them that's all you have.
Normally safe lah, but just make sure you dun expose yourself as being foreigners lah, dun give them a chance to slaughter you.
Although, I have never met any "mishaps" but it doesn't mean it won't happen. Play at your own risk and everyone have different level of street-smartness(not saying you lah, a general statement to all bros reading this).
