3G in LOS sucks big time (khun thais never really get their act after many years and still fighting on rights). AIS too works on edge network, slooooow and not optimal (unlike what you used back SG or MY).
Go for special data plan in bundles range thb250-500 or unlimited (cannot recall exact). All for 1 month validity. For short stays, 250 will do for ssurfing, sbf, mails etc. No need to pay for hotspots premium, no do anything. When topping up, be CLEAR as you might kena regular mobile phone plan (wipes you out in no time). Also important to switch off cellular connection when not in use. My mistake was dumb puying topped up mine +200bht on mobile plan (miscomm) and auto emptied in few hours kns.
Of course free wifi at hotels or outlets is best. But my experience with AIS data plan comes in handy from south to north. Not fastest, but still no brainer than roaming on peng maag home. For Malaysia, 3G is faster on ringgit 30 for 1 week
