Indonesia demands explanation from Singapore, South Korea over wiretapping

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has instructed Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa to demand an explanation from the Singaporean and South Korean ambassadors over their alleged involvement in wiretapping operations.

"Regarding the alleged involvement of the two countries, Singapore - a friendly neighbouring country, which is a fellow ASEAN member state - and South Korea - which is a country that we have good relations with as well, I have instructed our foreign minister to demand an explanation from the ambassadors of the two countries," said Yudhoyono at the Presidential Office in Jakarta, on Tuesday evening, as quoted by Antara news agency.

The President made the statement after he led a limited meeting to discuss the continuity of Indonesia-Australia relations, following Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott's response letter over reports that said Australia had bugged phone calls of several high-ranking Indonesian officials.

Yudhoyono highlighted the importance of agreeing on a protocol or code of ethics that regulate the relations of the two countries in the future.

The President further said he would assign Minister Natalegawa or a special envoy to discuss several deeper and more serious sensitive issues on Indonesia-Australia bilateral relations after the wiretapping scandal. He hoped that the two countries could implement adhere to the protocol and code of ethics.
